Output format decision

When to Export SVG, PDF, EPS, AI, or DXF

Choose SVG, PDF, EPS, AI, or DXF based on editing, print, browser, CAD, and CNC requirements instead of file extensions alone.

Intended result

Build the output format that matches the receiver's editing, rendering, or machine workflow when the same traced artwork must move between design, print, web, and fabrication tools.

Format choice should begin with the receiving workflow. A browser needs dependable SVG rendering; a printer may prefer PDF or EPS; CAD and laser work usually need DXF. The most editable format for one team may be the least reliable for another.

01

Start with the required action

Ask whether the receiver must edit nodes, preserve typography, print at scale, run in a browser, or drive a machine. The required action narrows the format before brand preference or historical habit enters the decision.

Verify

  • Name the receiving application.
  • Name the operation: edit, print, display, or cut.
  • Record whether fonts and effects may be flattened.
02

Match format strengths to the job

SVG is a strong web interchange format for paths and simple attributes. PDF is common for press-ready page composition. EPS remains useful in some print workflows. AI is optimized for Adobe editing but may require compatibility handling elsewhere. DXF carries linework for CAD and CAM.

Verify

  • Use SVG when browser rendering and scalable paths are central.
  • Use PDF or EPS for print handoff when the provider requests it.
  • Use DXF for CAD, laser, CNC, or plotter geometry.
03

Flatten only what the receiver cannot manage

Live text, strokes, masks, clipping, and linked images can survive differently across applications. Convert only the features that break the target workflow. Keep an editable master with those features intact when future changes are likely.

Verify

  • Test fonts and live text in the receiver.
  • Check stroke expansion and clipping after export.
  • Preserve layer or group names where supported.
04

Verify with a round trip

Open the exported file in the actual receiving application, measure a known dimension, and compare the visual result with the source. Save a sample accepted export with its settings so the next file can reproduce the same result.

Verify

  • Confirm format, version, and application.
  • Measure one known dimension.
  • Keep the source and accepted output together.

Common failure modes

  • Do not choose by extension alone; two formats can carry similar-looking artwork with different behavior.
  • Do not delete the editable master after producing a flattened handoff.
  • Do not assume a preview application and the final production application render effects identically.
